The Cranes are Flying (1957)
The Cranes are Flying is a brilliant Soviet drama about World War II and 1958 winner of the Palme d’Or. It is mostly about two people in love - Veronika (Tatiana Samoilova) and Boris (Aleksey Batalov) who are torn apart by the war, but also deals more generally with peoples’ suffering during war. A very moving and beautifully directed film.
