The 39 Steps (1935)
DIR: Alfred Hitchcock
The 39 Steps is arguably the best of Hitchock’s British films, before he moved to Hollywood in 1939. It is a thriller that is equally mysterious as it is humorous - a formula that Hitchcock would continue to use again and again. It stars Madeleine Carroll as the “cool blonde” alongside Robert Donat, who plays Hannay, a man who is innocent and yet is running away from the police.
